In The Spectacular Duet of Miss Anna Odette, Kaitlyn May introduces us to a young second grader who enjoys both science and dance. Anna loves asking questions and investigating to find the answers. After school, she heads to dance class, where her scientific brain continues to ask questions. How can we move more freely or jump higher? She suddenly realizes that dance is science, and she returns to her lab to develop an experiment. She decides to answer the question, How can we make our leaps higher? She develops a hypothesis and designs an experiment. She tries out her invention with success and continues her scientific process by analyzing the results. Now it’s time to share her invention with the other dancers.
Kaitlyn May has done a wonderful job in combining the worlds of dance and science. The Spectacular Duet of Miss Anna Odette is exactly the book young girls need to encourage their interest in science. Anna is a well-rounded character who shows that girls can embrace both their creativity and their brainpower. May has woven into the story a complete explanation of the scientific method and even includes Newton’s Laws! The illustrations by Elkin Rodriguez are marvelous. Anna looks fabulous in her purple lab coat and green sparkly sneakers as she works away in her lab. Kaitlyn May has written a powerful book that celebrates kids’ individuality and creativeness. The Spectacular Duet of Miss Anna Odette is a book that teachers will want to share in STEM programs and parents will want to share with their budding young scientists.
