Fables of the Oort Spiral is a captivating collection of speculative fiction short stories by Jay Veloso Batista. Brothers Ollie and Eli live very different lives on the mining support colony of Quaor. When Eli's wife tries to manipulate Ollie into giving up his life savings, the alien Ollie helped raise comes to his rescue. On a world presumably devoid of intelligent life, an exploratory vessel and its crew are shocked to stumble upon a sentient tree-like creature, the last one of its kind. Arwen Immigration officers unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a high-stakes conspiracy after their target is unexpectedly murdered in front of them. But nothing is as it seems. A transit worker discovers new purpose after encountering an augmented being during an unmitigated disaster.
This is a treat for sci-fi lovers. If you love stories featuring alien worlds, extraterrestrial creatures, and augmented humans, you will have a blast with this collection. As a sci-fi fan, I absolutely loved this book. Fables of the Oort Spiral pushes the boundaries of your imagination and encourages you to wonder if we could visit other worlds. These tales are action-packed, laced with humor, mystery, and intrigue, featuring settings that feel simultaneously lived-in and otherworldly. Jay Veloso Batista is a master at crafting absorbing narratives with immersive atmospheres that I think readers will find easy to get lost in. I also liked Batista's character work. Each protagonist goes through their own unique challenges in these narratives. They are also likable with distinct personalities that leave a mark on you. All in all, this is a fantastic book for short story readers.
