The Story of the Great Goddess by Nav Pallav is a beautiful and accessible retelling of the sacred text Devi Mahatmyam (also known as the Durga Saptashati). It tells the story of Mahadevi, one of the major figures in the Hindu religion and mythology. Somewhat surprisingly for a culture that is seen as patriarchal, this central figure is a Goddess, a beautiful and fearless champion of the gods against all kinds of monsters. The story begins with her birth through the combined radiance of all the gods. Armed with the gifts of their finest weapons and riding a magnificent lion, she does battle with demons. The story describes her different manifestations as the beautiful Goddess Parvati, the fearsome Goddess Kali, and the Goddess Ambika, whose vehicle is a swan and whose helpers are the divine Matrika. As the demons are defeated one by one, gods and humans alike seek her peace and protection.

Beautifully illustrated in rich colors, The Story of the Great Goddess by Nav Pallav is a good introduction to the core beliefs about Mahadevi. The illustrations highlight the harmonious contrast between the Goddess’s feminine appearance, as she floats lightly on delicate, hennaed feet, and her fighting abilities. The story and the pictures open the door to deeper meanings. The victories of the Goddess over demons can be read allegorically, as the defeat of arrogant pride and illusion. The book is written to introduce the story of Devi to children, but it will be of interest to people of all ages.
