In The Stray Cat Who Hides a Secret by Stanis Marusak Beck, we are introduced to a grandma and grandson who came across a stray gray cat that looks exactly like the one they had lost the previous year. Michael the grandson was so happy to see this new cat because it reminded him of his beloved Fifie. The little boy was heartbroken when she died and he didn’t understand that death is permanent as he often asked whether Fifie could come back out to play. Babcia was relieved that Michael quickly bonded with this new cat. Knowing that the cat was a stray, the two bought an igloo-shaped cat house so the cat would have a place to sleep. They had hoped to lure her with treats and toys but the cat simply didn’t want to be caught. Even after a year, they worried about the cat being outside as a stray but knew they would keep trying regardless.

I thought that The Stray Cat Hides a Secret was adorable and seeing the real photos that this story was based on warmed my heart. I think this book tackles several topics. One that stuck out to me was death and how Michael knew that Fifie was gone, but didn’t quite understand that dying was a permanent thing. The second is animal rescue because even though the cat didn’t want to be caught and brought indoors, Babcia made sure that the cat had everything that it needed, including its own home. I also loved the illustrations. They are so beautiful and fit perfectly with the storyline. Stanis Marusak Beck has written an adorable tale that’s based on real life and I look forward to reading more.
