So you’ve published your first book, or even your seventieth book. Congratulations. It’s definitely something to be proud of. Writing is such a fine art form, and feeling the finished product in your hands does provide the author with a sense of gratification for a job well done. But the job really isn’t done – not yet. Editing, publishing, printing and releasing the book is really only the beginning. Once that’s done, the work is just beginning. Why? Because, without an audience to read and enjoy the book, what is the point?
If you have the money, you can hire a publicist and let him/her do the work for you. But many authors lack the luxury of extra funds and opt to do publicity on their own. Where to start? Follow author Paula Margulies' suggestion and take Tao’s simple advice to heart: “Rushing into action, you fail. Trying to grasp things, you lose them. Forcing a project to completion, you ruin what was almost ripe.” Take things slowly and one step at a time and do some research, including Paula’s clear and simple guide to book promotion: The Tao of Book Publicity: A Beginner's Guide to Book Promotion.
Everything in this guide is spelled out clearly and sequentially, though, as the author points out, each chapter can be studied on its own, out of sequence with the others. From the basics of good editing, to the power of using social media, Paula has covered all angles of book publicity. She even offers sound advice to handling a powerful interview, live on television or radio. This is an excellent tool for all authors seeking advice on how to promote their written word.
