The Things I Agreed To by Jacob Anthony Rose follows Susan, a novelist whose life spirals out of control the moment her latest thriller is published. Instead of celebrating her success, she watches in pure horror as the internet twists her words into something they are not. Soon enough, people start claiming that her book is actually an autobiography hiding some very deep, dark secrets. Worse yet, a popular online commentator begins amplifying the rumors, leaving Susan to face a tidal wave of public judgment and invasive questions. Sadly enough, when Susan chooses to stay silent for her own peace of mind, her publishers and acquaintances begin to view her boundaries as a threat to their brand. Slowly, they begin to cancel her events, leaving her feeling completely isolated. Much to her disbelief, Susan must now watch as total strangers begin to rewrite her identity from the sidelines. How far will she have to go to reclaim her voice from an entitled public that refuses to just leave her be?

The Things I Agreed To by Jacob Anthony Rose is a brilliant psychological thriller that I simply couldn't put down. I chose this novel thinking it would be a relaxing weekend read, but it quickly turned into a binge session because I desperately needed to know whether Susan would find a way out of this trap. I loved how much care went into building her character, particularly the way her inner thoughts are depicted while everything falls apart around her all at once. The prose is very smooth and absorbing. It completely hooks you, making Susan’s invisible anxiety feel very authentic. By taking the traditional paranoia angle of the genre and adjusting it for the digital age, the story leaves you thinking about how easily people can take over another person's story today, at the press of a button. Readers who enjoy gradual suspense, great character studies, and stories that challenge how we look at public accountability will absolutely love this book. Very highly recommended.
