The Trouble With Bubble Gum was penned by author Shari Schwert with illustrations provided by artist Mari Sebastian. It is intended for young readers aged around four to eight years old and offers adventure, action, and humor. This charming picture book is a whimsical cautionary tale about the misadventures of a bubble gum-popping boy whose defiance of his mother's warning leads to unexpected consequences. This is an absolute delight of a story that brings a cautionary tale to life in a fun and engaging way. Schwert's clever use of rhyme is key to the light and playful tone of the work, making it both entertaining and educational as young readers begin to follow the rhythm of the adventure.

The narrative skillfully captures the playful curiosity of childhood while also imparting a valuable lesson about listening to parental advice. Mari Sebastian’s gorgeously colorful illustrations also enhanced the emotional drama of the disaster and the reaction that our young hero has to it all. The shadowy presence of the shouting parent was an especially evocative image that stuck with me. As the young protagonist's bubble gum escapade unfolds, the humor and whimsy of the story take a bit more of a serious turn and bring its key learning moment home smoothly and confidently, immersing readers in the sticky situation with very real consequences. Schwert's witty storytelling not only entertains but also sparks important discussions about responsibility and consequences that will be valuable for parents and teachers alike. Overall, The Trouble With Bubble Gum is a charming and engaging read that both children and adults will enjoy, and I would certainly recommend it.
