The Undines is the second volume in Laura Albu's cruise ship adventures. Carla was transferred to another ship and torn from her love, Adnan. They promise their love can handle a year's separation, but Carla has doubts after Adnan's email responses slow down to a stop. She makes the best of the cruise ship she was sent to work on, but it isn't easy making new friends, learning the routine of a new ship, and staying optimistic about her boyfriend. She becomes frustrated when she is forced to dock because of friction between her national country and Canada. Instead of waiting around for months, Carla talks the captain into getting her reassigned to her previous ship. She can't wait to be with Adnan again, but has he been faithful like he has promised?
I found The Undines fascinating as Laura Albu painted a beautiful story about Carla. I thought the plot was original, as cruise ships are often a coveted vacation, but the crew members are often neglected. Readers who enjoy traveling to exotic places and a diversity of characters will find the novel mesmerizing. While this is a relaxing read, it has colorful descriptions that bring the countries to life and the people become real. Albu has woven a delightful and engaging story that shows the frustration and benefits of working on a cruise ship. It becomes a whirlwind journey through different ports and associates. Overall, The Undines has given me a different look at crew members' struggles and the hidden life of those serving on the seas.
