The Whirring by Will J. Donnel is a multi-generational fantasy told by Lytie, an Irish-American matriarch. The story focuses on her family's unique mystical inheritance. In this story, you will meet five grandchildren, Alina, Kayla, Donnie, Coleton, and Emalee, who manifest "the gift," which is an ancestral ability to connect and communicate with fairies. They also perceive interdimensional realms. Alina finds a dying dragonfly called Vatro, and the family learns that Lelano, the fairy princess, and other royal children have been taken by bad entities operating in Seattle's underground. This summons the adult siblings, Holden, Natalie, and the fearful Cal, who undertake a dangerous rescue mission that is fraught with danger and betrayal. Dark energy threatens to destroy the balance of the world -- can this family stop them?
I found The Whirring to be elegiac, a magical tale. The characters are so well-drawn that I fell in love with them, especially Lytie and the children in the family. They are dealing with something magical, yet they are grounded in their ordinary experiences. The narrative voice is genuine, compelling, and delivered from an intimate first-person perspective, allowing Lytie's wisdom to shine through every page. I followed the characters with interest and enjoyed the depiction of Holden’s foolhardy bravery and Cal’s struggles with childhood trauma. Lytie is the historian and spiritual anchor of the story. Will J. Donnel transported me to the Colorado farm and the rainy streets of Seattle, as well as the mythic volcanic chambers of Mount Rainier, where time dilates. You’ll be captivated by the symbolism in this enthralling tale, with the “whirring” of the dragonfly wings functioning as a plot device and a metaphor for the vibrational frequency of the love that connects a family to the spiritual world.
