Marco Lobo's "The Witch Hunter's Amulet" is story of the age old struggle for territories and religions. When Portugal occupied India in the sixteenth century it sought to fling out the ancient religions of Islam and Hinduism by whatever means necessary. The tactics of the Inquisition sets the Witch Hunter into motion, arresting any woman accused of being a consort to Satan. The hunter Andrade makes himself rich in these acts in the name of religion; however, his life is soon to be turned upside down. Poisoned and sick, he is convinced that he needs something of the old ways, the ways he has worked against as a Witch Hunter. Marco Lobo has a plot that is full of so much from a war and a tiger hunt to a trial and the dungeons of the inquisition that you almost don’t know where to look.
The rich and colorful fabric of this book is simply a masterpiece by Marco Lobo. The questions that this book puts forward while telling its story will make you think and question. I love a book that can make me ask myself “what would I do if this was me?”. When you can place yourself in the shoes of a character it is the mark of an engaging story. Now while I could put myself into Andrade's shoes I never did really like him as a character. His job to me was such a put off, and yet I could feel his inner turmoil when he goes seeking the jewels he thinks will help him. It is this very conflict of character set against the vivid prose that makes this story so engaging. If you are a reader who likes to think they can feel the heat of an exotic place and smell the spices, this is a book for you. "The Witch Hunter's Amulet" will take you to India during the occupation by Portugal and show you some secrets.
