In Gary B's The Woman Who Wasn't, at first glance, Dr. Evelyn Harper sounds almost too good to be true. As a dedicated professional, her life revolves around the smooth running of her psychiatric practice. Her self-discipline ensures strict adherence to an exacting routine, but her life also seems sterile and isolated. Clockwork without a soul. The only person she interacts with other than her patients is Anna, her receptionist. When a male patient, Jacob, confesses to having encountered a woman who could be Dr. Harper's twin under disturbing circumstances, Evelyn's wafer-thin veneer of self-control shatters. And when she glimpses the doppelganger, she is drawn into a potentially lethal quest for answers. Can she trust Jacob, who is fast becoming her ally and intimate confidant, and her own sanity? As Evelyn's double begins to encroach upon her once ordered life, reality itself feels unreliable and compromised.
The Woman Who Wasn't by Gary B paints a world of sinister conspiracies and disturbing implications. It challenges the reader to consider the seemingly secure fortress of their own identity, while drawing on both the age-old myth of the doppelganger and the fast-moving behemoth of modern bioscience, almost like something out of the Black Mirror series. It is both a psychological thriller and a classic sci-fi horror. Readers will find themselves drawn into a compelling puzzle of control and unscrupulous players. The story offers readers nail-biting, page-turning tension. At times, Evelyn's palpable frustration becomes totally visceral, especially when her questions are diverted time and again with the same cryptically sinister phrase. This compelling mystery is recommended to readers who crave a suspenseful story in a quick read.
