It has been more than a decade since the war began on Solara, a world of sprawling lands and isles. It was sparked after the Nightshade Empire, the government that rules most of Solara, launched a persecution campaign against Arcanists, people who can draw on the current, a fundamental energetic force. However, the war soon spun out of control and included the Resistance, a coalition of nations and people opposing the Nightshade Empire’s rule. Many Arcanists joined the Resistance, especially its elite special operations unit, the Sunburst Legion. After the death of Captain Dedrick, Marysa, his lover and an Arcanist, takes over command of the Sunburst Legion. But the Resistance immediately suffers a huge blow as it loses its bastion, the city of Yuanyang, to the Nightshades in a devastating attack. This win is just a part of the grand plan of Darian Blackburn, the Generalus and Prime Magus of the Nightshade Empire, for the war. Can Marysa reunite the squad, cripple the Nightshade army, and end the war? Find out in The Weapons We’re Born With: Currents of War Book 1 by Brett O’Brien.
This tour de force will seize you by the scruff of your neck, propel you forward, and remain relentless, only loosening its grip after the final word. If you’re looking for a high fantasy novel flavored with visceral action, epic adventure, sci-fi, drama, psychological thrills, nerve-shredding suspense, jaw-dropping plot twists, and spellbinding cliffhangers, The Weapons We’re Born With by Brett O’Brien is a must-read. Right from the tense, frantic, and explosive introduction, I could tell O’Brien has a tremendously gifted narrative hand. The raw narration and the impressive world-building brought the story’s setting and the well-crafted characters to life on the pages. As I followed the characters moving through cities and forts in Solara in pursuit of their goals, I could see the tragic balance of existence among advanced technology, magic, and medieval elements. The storyline moves at a steady pace, allowing me to follow the characters’ personal struggles and the development of the layered, intriguing plot. Here, O’Brien weaves a dark, compelling tale of survival, betrayal, ruthless ambition, painful sacrifices, and bloodshed. For those who appreciated the intensity, grit, and moral complexity of Dune, this page-turner is for you. It is an incredible debut in the Currents of War series. I loved it, and can’t wait to read the next installment.
