This Is Epic is a young adult drama novel by Joan Bauer. Epic Dupree grew up in a musical family. The Duprees were a popular folk rock band from Savannah, Georgia. Ten years ago, they split up with a spectacular blowout. Tired of the antics of her abusive, alcoholic father and neglectful mother, Epic left her home for Chicago. Now, their former manager, Inga Rolle, is desperate to get the band together because the fans haven't really forgotten them. Reluctantly, Epic returns home and soon finds herself in conflict. Her ex-fiancé, Dev, wants her back, and she learns the identity of someone close to her. Epic must now find a way to reconcile with her family. But can she forgive them? Will The Duprees ever perform again?

A coming-of-age tale about a dysfunctional family, This Is Epic is an absorbing read through and through. I loved the characters, plot, and pacing of this book. In fact, there isn't a single dull moment in the entire novel. Joan Bauer's characterization and dialogue are absolutely top-notch. There's humor, heartbreak, and plenty of family drama to keep you thoroughly hooked. Epic is a fascinating protagonist. She has a very likable personality, and I found myself sympathizing with her from the beginning. Bauer really excels at depicting complex family dynamics. Epic's relationships with her father, her mother, and her siblings are complicated and uniquely dysfunctional. I liked how the family came together toward the end. As someone who reads a lot of coming-of-age stories, I feel like This Is Epic is up there with the best of them this year. Highly recommended.
