Through Grandma's Eyes by J.E. Smythe is an inter-generational drama of love and forgiveness. Told in three parts and from two points of view, Through Grandma’s Eyes first starts off when 19-year-old LaCrae James heads up to New York with dreams of being a world renowned dancer and star. Showing up unannounced on her grandmother Mae's doorstep after defying her own mother, LaCrae gets taken in by Mae who is willing to help her find her own way, but still keeps an eye on her, hoping her granddaughter won't pay the price of a few potentially dangerous decisions. When LaCrae ends up getting into more trouble than she bargained for, Mae shares a tale of her own dreams and ambitions that were very similar to LaCrae's own.

Weaving past and present, Through Grandma’s Eyes is a story of perseverance and family love. Through Grandma’s Eyes by J.E. Smythe is a fast paced read that hits all the points fans of the genre have come to expect and enjoy. It is well written enough that even though I was able to guess where the story was headed, Through Grandma’s Eyes still managed to keep my attention. I did find myself encountering a lot of colorism which dampened my enjoyment of the book and for the most part made it easy to guess who the good guys and bad guys were. But for those who have an easier time moving past such notions, Through Grandma’s Eyes by J.E. Smythe will be an emotional debut that could tug at the heart strings.
