Thunder Heart of Mist Valley by Ms. B. Lamping is a historical romance set in a time when Indian and white relationships are still tense. The story is told from the point of view of Thunder Heart, a Cheyenne Indian from Mist Valley. Thunder Heart becomes a gifted healer for his people, learning to read and speak numerous languages in his quest for greater knowledge to benefit his people. After the tragic loss of his wife in childbirth, Thunder Heart gives up on love and devotes himself to caring for his people. In a vision he sees a woman being tossed about in the sea and screaming for help. Thunder Heart knows it is his destiny to save her so he sets off on his journey to do so. Mari and her brother William are traveling from Portland to Vancouver to start over after the death of their parents. A terrible storm strikes and the ship is torn apart, tossing everyone overboard. Mari struggles to stay above the water and ends up on shore unconscious. Thunder Heart finds her in the nick of time and saves her life. Both find they have fallen in love with each other, but will their love be strong enough in a world where interracial relations are looked down upon?
Thunder Heart of Mist Valley by Ms. B. Lamping is a great telling of how the power of love can overcome any obstacle. The characters are well-developed and the descriptions of the locations are detailed and vivid. Thunder Heart's fierce loyalty to his tribe makes him an endearing character. Mari's fiery independent streak makes her a delightful character as well. I enjoyed reading the tale unfold from both the hero and heroine's points of view. It is a nice change from the traditional heroine point of view in most romance novels. The detailed medicinal inclusions in the book, from the tribal traditional use of herbs to the more modern western medicine, were especially appealing to my nursing background.
