Time Paradox by Athena Stamelou is the second book in the Tales of a Bounty Hunter series, and follows Raven, a witch whose partner, Novah, is the last Time Lord. When the vampire Yokai abducts Novah to seize the Key that opens Eurilia, the source of time travel, Raven mounts a rescue. The attack has damaged history, however, because Yokai has sent vampires into the past to erase the events that created Novah’s powers. To restore the timeline, Novah sends his companions into different eras, where each must protect a moment from interference. Raven enters a version of Veloria where the Werewolves face destruction centuries too soon, while the seer Ramiel searches for the sorceress Nimue before Novah’s younger self is lost forever. Their missions lead toward an enemy whose plan reaches beyond Novah’s survival to the fate of reality itself.
“When the Universe wants something to happen, then all the pieces will fall together whether you want to or not.” Time Paradox is a fantastic Christian speculative adventure, and Athena Stamelou does an excellent job of blending sorcery with space travel. Every power changes what the characters can do, such as when Raven discovers that her seeking spell rebounds from the wards hiding Novah, the last Time Lord. The Christian elements are beautifully integrated by making service to the Lord central to the conflict across history; Rafael’s instruction that Nimue meet the seer Ramiel shows divine direction protecting Novah’s future. Raven is a protagonist with deep feeling, and we see this as it guides Raven through every altered timeline, including the mission to preserve the Werewolves connected to Novah’s survival. I recommend the series to imaginative adventure fans who enjoy faith-centered fantasy set across alien worlds.
