"A Touch of Silver" by Melissa R. Smith is a paranormal thriller set in an alternative Portland, Oregon, where humans and Sanguines have reached an uneasy peace. This is the second book in Smith's 'Legacy series'; however, it is well-presented enough to stand alone. It is the story of Devani Daniels, the daughter of a deceased Militia leader, who is under the surveillance and scrutiny of the current Militia Chief, Weinright, and Roman, her Sanguine companion. The Militia is a quasi-official organization that is opposed to the acceptance, and seeks to regulate the lives of Sanguines. Devani and Roman have chosen to live apart because of Militia regulations, but even that precaution has not stopped Weinright from making attempts on both of their lives.
This is the first book I've read in the series, and I didn't feel any confusion over reading the books out-of-order. Nor did I experience any force-feeding of information from book one. The action starts on page one of this urban fantasy, and Smith swiftly gets her readers involved in the plot. Devani is a well-developed character, strong, self-reliant and caring. Roman is a good match for her, and the romance between the two is well-developed and does not overwhelm the story. I enjoyed "A Touch of Silver" and recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy and paranormal stories. It would also be a great introduction to fantasy books for those who prefer the thriller and suspense genres. It is well-written and a lot of fun. I'll be looking for the other books in Smith's Legacy series.
