Robert F. Glahe’s Rattz On The Prowl follows Christopher “Sludge” Dragoon, a veteran Frontier Space Marine whose mission on Genesis Minor ends with his squad dead and his body carrying ten young Rattz. The creatures are hybrids of Earth rats and Blazant biology whose spread has helped drive the alien Blazant Imperium from occupied human worlds. Sludge survives long enough for military doctors to remove the offspring, only for the specimens to escape inside the secret station studying them. As security collapses, Sludge discovers the encounter has altered his body in ways the doctors did not anticipate. The crisis points toward station director Arnold Freeb, who disappears with one Rattz. Sludge joins Lieutenant Johnson’s crew in pursuit, unaware that Freeb’s escape is connected to a military experiment that reaches far beyond the station.
Robert F. Glahe’s Rattz On The Prowl is brilliant military science fiction, and Glahe knows how to make bizarre situations feel at home in his universe. The humor is fantastic, especially as Sludge crawls through station ventilation ducts in teddy-bear pajamas carrying sedative gas for escaped Rattz. I love Sludge, and Glahe gives his veteran swagger a wonderfully odd rhythm, especially in the old-Earth sayings he applies to life on the frontier: “I bobble like a hula girl on a dashboard. Thank you, Earth Almanac.” Slurp, a flatulent Slorg from Brigand Ferry, is another favorite, with his sleep gas being useful against Rattz inside the station. The science fiction elements are creative and blend organically into an inorganic world, from Brigand Ferry’s violet sewage canals to Perky, a young Rattz Sludge trains using cherry pie. Funny and inventive, readers who enjoy irreverent military science fiction will adore this.
