Toxic Turkey by Gage Irving begins as a family drama and slowly unravels into a gripping supernatural conspiracy. We’re with the Donnelly family as they attempt a heartfelt Thanksgiving reunion, which soon becomes a crucible for long-buried secrets and unspoken conflicts. But the fractures in the family are only the beginning because something otherworldly has been watching, and the mysterious Attison Korabank is assembling a team to face a threat that may already be unfolding. What starts as domestic tension evolves into an eerie, genre-bending story of betrayal, danger, and cosmic stakes.
Author Gage Irving has a way of penning realistic people that throws you straight into their lives with a lot of clever context clues and emotive dialogue, and this makes for a surprising blend of family drama and supernatural intrigue that gripped and intrigued me all at once. I’ve never read a work like this before, and there’s a skill in Irving’s pacing as he builds tension skillfully from the personal drama to paranormal action in compelling layers. The slow burn of the plot is worth it in the initial stages as we get to know the characters. Attison Korabank is a fascinating, enigmatic figure anchoring the larger mystery around the family and causing tension to multiply as old grievances get out of control. I couldn’t get enough of the drama and finding out what would happen next, especially as the cosmic horror elements bled in. Overall, Toxic Turkey is a highly recommended read that fans of slow-burn horror and character-driven suspense will be hooked on from start to finish.
