Every Man A Jack by Caleb Brabham and Violet Ransom is set in 1888 London. Mary Kelly reads tarot cards and makes her living in Whitechapel as murders attributed to Jack the Ripper begin terrifying the East End. After Mary “Polly” Nichols is killed, women around Mary watch every shadow as newspapers turn each new detail into public fascination. Across London, Dr. John Watson prepares for marriage as Sherlock Holmes keeps his distance from the police investigation. Their worlds draw closer as Mary questions what she sees around her and Inspector Frederick Abberline searches for answers in a city thick with rumor. The mystery stretches beyond Whitechapel, bringing literary characters alongside figures from history in a Victorian London where fact and fiction share the same streets.
Caleb Brabham and Violet Ransom’s Every Man A Jack gives Mary Kelly a fascinating place in the Ripper mystery. The authors develop her as an intelligent woman who knows Whitechapel intimately, so her determination to understand the killings grows naturally from the danger surrounding women like her. That comes through when she questions Inspector Abberline about conflicting medical opinions concerning the murderer’s training. Watson is equally fascinating, with his medical background giving the case another perspective. The mystery is amplified by how extraordinarily well the story uses the actual unanswered history of the Ripper crimes. Brabham and Ransom make London a character in its own right, from Dorset Street’s icy brick walls and grimy cobblestones to Commissioner Charles Warren’s gold-edged office at Scotland Yard. Beautifully written, full of thrills, and immersive, readers who love Victorian mysteries will absolutely adore this book.
