Artificial Intelligence has become the fastest-growing technology the world has ever seen. Getting to grips with it may seem challenging, but Jason Walsh has come to our assistance with Understanding the AI Stack. He reflects that the role of AI has evolved from being a tool to becoming a worker. The implications for humans are obvious and troubling. The AI Stack has five layers, comprising computer chip manufacturers, chip designers, cloud infrastructure providers, model builders, and product/application. The book outlines the development of AI, what it can do, and where it is headed. It also highlights the way in which the control over computer chip production and AI development remains in the hands of a few companies. The major players in the industry are reviewed in detail, along with the various types of computer chips, who designs them, and who manufactures them. Apart from the advantages of using AI, which are already apparent in areas such as cost efficiency and advances in healthcare, there are concerns, including job losses and the vast amounts of electricity and water that data centers consume.
Jason Walsh describes AI as “the most consequential industry on Earth” that will dramatically influence the future of thinking for a living. In addition to providing a wealth of information, Understanding the AI Stack tackles three major issues -- control of the industry, AI awareness, and the impact on the labor market. With the realignment of jobs, new skills will be required, with mid-level workers hardest hit. AI is not yet perfect, and early versions did suffer from glitches. The question is whether AI can become aware or develop its own consciousness. This book is concise, clear, and provides an informed and honest appraisal. It gives an incisive look into a world that is deeper than the public appreciates. Interesting facts are highlighted in separate boxes. The author points out that by the time this revised edition is printed, part of it will already be outdated. Such is the pace of change. This informative guide sketches the landscape on which future battles for AI dominance will take place. It is rounded off with a comprehensive glossary and a knowledge test with answers. It is a perceptive and visionary work that is highly recommended.
