Verse by Verse: A Daily Devotional Through the Whole Bible, Volume 1 by Benjamin McGreevy is a meticulously delivered verse-by-verse examination of the Bible, starting with the opening chapters of the book of Genesis. This is the first volume in what the author intends to be a comprehensive discussion of the 66 biblical books. I was fascinated by the author’s ingenious plan to follow the conviction that “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16) and walk you through each verse while exploring the bigger context of the Scripture and other elements that bring clarity to each verse. The reflections are grounded in careful exegesis, and they connect ancient scriptural texts to contemporary spirituality in a way that demands meditative engagement with the texts.
Benjamin McGreevy’s book is a spiritual gift for those seeking intimacy with God. The author gives a step-by-step guide for preparing to read each verse. The book provides questions that accompany each chapter, and these questions will help you identify the core message of each verse, the character of God, a command to be obeyed, and how the verse connects with the bigger plan of God for humanity. The book also includes tools for journaling, making it even more interactive. Verse by Verse is a devotional that explores the verses, focusing on God’s intentional design in creation, the painful rupture through sin, the recurring plan of redemption, and more. I was impressed by how well the author incorporates the trinitarian theology into Genesis and how effectively he identifies Christ as the creative word. The voice is a blend of scholarly insight and pastoral warmth, engaging and authoritative. I look forward to the second book in this collection.
