Vivo Reckoning: Book 1 of the Pax Globus Anthology by Eric Brandt explores the profound question of parental love through the lens of Dr. John Bates, a father and physician fighting to save his daughter amid the chaos of a second American Civil War. Set in a world devastated by biological warfare, the story follows John's perilous journey across a fractured America where every decision carries weight and every step forward requires sacrifice. This debut novel masterfully combines elements of political intrigue, military conflict, and personal drama while examining the lasting impact of America's historical sins. Brandt's careful attention to character development and world-building creates a rich backdrop for this exploration of human resilience and the preservation of ideals in a broken world.
Author Eric Brandt does a fantastic job of balancing action-packed sequences with deeper philosophical questions in this fascinating character study, and I read every page of this work with my heart in my throat. I was particularly impressed by how the author maintains emotional authenticity even in the most intense moments of conflict, never straying into Hollywood-esque tropes, but keeping the responses John has more realistic. The development of strong female characters adds even more depth and complexity to the narrative from lesser-known perspectives. The way Brandt handles political themes without sacrificing the detail and intimate drama of personal stakes shows exceptional storytelling ability. His exploration of the core father-daughter relationships was so touching, and will no doubt resonate with readers who can relate to that powerful parental love aspect. The narrative weaves in the themes of devotion and sacrifice, making even the most extraordinary circumstances feel deeply human, and offers scenes that examine both the personal cost of survival and the price of maintaining principles. Overall, I would highly recommend Vivo Reckoning to readers who appreciate science fiction that combines thoughtful social commentary with genuine emotional depth.
