Wasteful Sam by Gilda Burket is a picture book for young children. Sam the squirrel lives on Pam's farm, along with lots of other animals, such as pigs and chickens. Sam likes to spend his time climbing trees, chasing birds, and just watching the other animals go about their day. But one particular day, Sam notices a tree, and it's no ordinary tree; it is full of yummy apples! Sam immediately climbs up to feast on the beautiful red apples that Pam's tree has produced, but he is wasteful and begins to take one bite out of each apple. As soon as Pam sees what Sam is up to, she quickly shoos him away and feeds the leftover apples to the other animals, who enjoy them just as much as Sam did. When Sam returns to the delicious apple tree, hoping to gobble some more, he discovers that there aren't any left, leaving Sam feeling sad. What should Sam have done differently?

Wasteful Sam is a short but sweet book that children will both love and learn from. Gilda Burket has written a story that will teach children how not to be wasteful when it comes to food. Whilst this is the main lesson the author is trying to convey, I also picked up on a couple more, such as learning how to share with others and how food shouldn't be taken for granted. All of this will benefit children as they get older. The illustrations, also by the author, are adorable and children will love them! I enjoyed every page of this educational book, and I hope to read more from Gilda Burket in the future. I'd love to read one where Sam the squirrel learns from his mistakes.
