L.A. Hilden’s Timestream is a really well-executed adventure, with time travel through implanted technology activated by ley lines and portal commencers. Every jump pushes the plot forward, with Harper as the story's lead. Harper is likeable and easy to relate to. Her determination is as authentic as her awe at what she discovers. After reaching Columbia University in 2023, she's bowled over by student life, lifting the curtain on how freedom vanished from her century. The author gives ancillary characters equal fleshing out. I love Ishtarriya, a gardener Harper meets in ancient Nineveh, who risks punishment by helping Harper steal something she absolutely must have, and is willing to lie to protect the mission. The settings are wonderfully visual, from Mount Shasta during a frozen climb toward the timestream, to Goldenforge Valley and its surveillance state filled with patrol drones and artificial housing. This is a solid first book in the Echoes of Eternity series, and I'm excited to see where book two takes us. Very highly recommended.

Timestream by L.A. Hilden shows a gift for making time travel feel like lived risk within Harper’s body. The author anchors Harper Knight’s search for Leva in tools unique to this book, from the portal commencer synced to Harper’s arm implant to Rasta’s harmonic healing system. The author makes each era matter through lived detail: Columbia University becomes a place of abundance to a girl from rationed Region 22, while Nineveh’s golden mandrake terraces give ancient history a direct role in Leva’s survival. Harper’s loyalty to Lark, her fury at Tobias, her refusal to abandon Leva, all come from a firm sense of family under pressure. This is speculative fiction with an unmistakable signature, and book one in the Echoes of Eternity series. Readers who want a brand new time travel adventure to hop on to will be blown over by Hilden’s work, as I am.

L.A. Hilden keeps it simple with Timestream: Echoes of Eternity, Book 1. She explains the state of the nation in Harper and Lark’s timeline, clearly outlining the remarkable differences between the past and the present, especially regarding people’s rights. One example is the fate that befalls Harper’s longtime home. The dialogue transitions from casual when Harper interacts with the residents of the timelines she visits to technical when the narrative focus shifts to the technology Harper and Lark use to outsmart the authorities. Hilden’s remarkable attention to detail comes to the fore in how the author describes the animals Harper and Lark encounter in the past and how they relate to twentieth-century technology. What stands out is the author's adherence to the time-travel canon while simplifying complex concepts, such as the multiverse, so that readers can understand them easily. These elements, combined with a breakneck pace and entertaining confrontation scenes, give a novel that will appeal to science fiction purists and action enthusiasts.
