From a small village in northern Italy, the family moves to the UK and the U.S. When WWII is declared, Tommy Beales, the main character in the novel, joins the army to follow his dream of traveling to other parts of the world. He rises through the ranks and becomes acting Major in transport for The Royal Army Service Corps. In 1945, towards the end of the war, Tommy and Roman, a Russian Cavalry Colonel, stumble upon information that changes their lives. Together with Tommy’s cousins, they devise an intricate plan that enriches them and their families for generations to come.

It follows the interesting experiences of different family members, exploring the risks and threats they encounter. Though they are surrounded by opulence, their lives are imperfect. The story contains surprising revelations about the family including a fierce feud. It also follows Roman’s interesting life and his long-term friendship with Tommy. Through his life, the novel includes informative snippets of Russia’s recent history. Action scenes also appear. They are exciting and many times unpredictable. The novel is comprised of many sub-plots involving different aspects of Tommy and his family’s lives, which makes it compelling.
