What I Did After I Died by Ryan Standley is a novella that blends humor, mystery, and the supernatural. The story kicks off with the protagonist discovering that he's dead, yet continuing life as usual, navigating the shock and denial of his new reality. Through vivid storytelling, Standley crafts a unique adventure involving a treasure hunt sparked by discovering a mysterious WWII-era letter hinting at hidden gold. The characters are vivid and relatable, from the protagonist’s quick-witted narration to his interactions with his eccentric family. Granny, a particularly memorable character, adds a touch of nostalgia and warmth to the story with her quirks and cherished family history.
The dynamics among the family members are realistic and often humorous, but the novella doesn't shy away from deeper themes, such as loss, reconciliation, and coming to terms with one’s past. These moments add emotional depth to what might initially seem like a lighthearted ghost story. The writing is accessible and filled with lively dialogue that enhances the storytelling.
