In What Love Leaves Behind by Marian L. Thomas, Storm enters the world as her mother takes her last breath. Etta Harris, longing to be a mother, hopes to adopt Storm and provide her with the chance at a better life. Etta envisions building a family that can grow, adapt, and face challenges together. Etta’s husband, James, however, is content with their life as it is, just the two of them, and hides a secret he has never shared with Etta. At the same time, Daren loses his wife, Michelle, during the birth of their son, Isaiah. Consumed by grief, Daren struggles to connect with the child until May encourages him to take the first step toward bonding with his son. None of them, Etta, James, May, or Daren, realizes how fate will weave their lives together and what lies ahead.

What Love Leaves Behind by Marian L. Thomas is an intriguing book that captured my attention from the very first page. The pacing was steady, allowing me to savor each moment, while the chapters flowed seamlessly into one another. The story took me on a roller coaster of emotions: grief, hope, and the power of friendship. Thomas’s engaging writing style drew me in so completely that I felt every emotion the characters experienced. The characters were well-developed, each with a distinct role and purpose in the unfolding plot. While the main characters’ lives became deeply intertwined, the infants were never overlooked. It almost felt as though they, too, understood their mothers’ absences and shared in each other’s silent grief. This was an exceptional book, brought to a satisfying and memorable conclusion. It is a story that will stay with me long after turning the last page.
