When Castles Fall by Jill Gagnon is about Jade’s night of horror, which began with a deadbolt that was left unlocked during a normal Florida storm and a power outage. Jade woke up during the night and decided to turn on the breakers to keep the fridge running. Two people gained access through the garage, and Jade came across them. The tall man, whose appearance made her think of a snake, pushed Jade inside the house. Jade’s focus on the image of a snake helped her avoid worrying about the possibility of dying and kept her from panicking. During the unpleasant experience, Jade tries to protect the teenager who was unwillingly involved. Jade's world is turned upside down when the situation gets out of hand and ends unexpectedly.
When Castles Fall is a gripping psychological thriller by Jill Gagnon. The story was engaging, with unexpected twists and turns. It was a page-turner, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what would happen next, and I was guessing until the end. The characters were well-developed and relatable. I enjoyed Jade's reference to the tall man as a snake, and I could easily see it in my mind's eye. These images lighten the dark mood of what was happening. The story is well-written and had me hooked from the start until the end. Sensitive topics like addiction and suicide were handled with great care. The story exceeded all my expectations, and I enjoyed the surprises.
