Author Biography

Peter Cotton is a semi-retired Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, living on nearby Dewees Island. He grew up in England, and graduated as a doctor in 1963. He left England in 1986 to become Professor of Medicine at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. He moved again to Charleston, South Carolina in 1994 to initiate the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC. Peter has been active in many National and International organizations and has given invited lectures and demonstrations in over 50 countries. His bibliography includes more than 900 medical publications and 17 medical textbooks.
His stories about Fred the snake started as a bedtime story for his kids to remind them how (not) to cross the road. When they had their kids, they asked “what happened to Fred-Fred”. Peter found a wonderful illustrator (Bonnie Lemaire) and published “When Fred the Snake was Squished and Mended”. This proved popular and he got on a roll, with now 9 books about Fred, managed by Bublish inc. After recovering from squishing, Fred went to school with the boy, received some friends from Jungle Jim, explored Charleston, went to the beach, and then went camping. Books 7, 8 and 9 has Fred and friends touring the sights of USA. The books have been well reviewed and gained several awards including 2 Mom’s choice gold medals. One reviewer said “Move over Lewis Carroll”. Peter was not named after a rabbit.

From the majestic Niagara Falls to Washington's proud buildings, Fred the adventurous snake and his friends have toured some of the USA's most remarkable and jaw-dropping destinations. Their trip takes them further west in this new Fred the Snake series installment. In Los Angeles, California, they meet a movie star who takes them to a movie set. In Washington State, they climb Seattle's needle to see the city and Vancouver, Canada, from the sky. Best yet, they navigate the Pacific in Alaska on a wooden ship beside pods of whales, board a big dog sled across the icy tundra, and eventually continue on to surf mighty waves in Hawaii. Join these adventurous and fun-loving friends in Peter B. Cotton's When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore the USA-West.

When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore USA-West is packed with exciting characters and magical moments of adventure that are often spiced up with lots of action and suspense. You never know if they'll take a float plane or decide to take the bus to their next destination and what new people or animals they'll meet there. I couldn't wait to see if they'd interact with Hawaii's acrobatic dolphins at the beach. Bonnie Lemaire's sparkling illustrations that resemble cartoon screenshots help you picture the adventure. Peter B. Cotton's use of simple yet lyrical and intriguing wording is equally commendable. Children may even role-play different pages and thus boost their concentration. The charming story offers a thrilling adventure for young minds that shows new and exciting places, the beauty in celebrating cultures, and encourages coexistence with local wildlife. The message will also instill in children the importance of friendships, camaraderie, and how having fun makes life worth living.

When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore USA-West is a children’s picture book written by Peter Cotton with illustrations by Bonnie Lemaire. The story follows Fred, a colorful red and yellow snake, and his friends as they explore the United States of America. In this installation, they travel through California, Nevada, Alaska, and Hawaii. They have fun in Hollywood with a movie star, who helps Fred place a star on their sidewalk of fame. Later, they go skiing and enjoy the freshest snow in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and save a bird in the mountains of Yosemite, California. They fly through the Golden Gate Bridge and visit the prison on Alcatraz Island. Finally, they journey to Alaska where they meet the native Alaskans, see the northern lights and wild animals, and explore the beautiful islands of Hawaii.

After reading When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore USA-East, I could not wait to read another book from this series. When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore USA-West is an educative and entertaining book, and I had fun reading it. Children will be introduced to Fred and his amazing crew, and they will learn about geographical sites and national monuments. Peter Cotton's storytelling is fascinating because he uses rhyming words and phrases. The book contains eye-catching illustrations that depict the cheerful characters perfectly and correspond with the text. I highly recommend parents and caregivers read this book with their children and take them on an adventure. Fred’s journey is not yet over because he might be exploring countries around the world the next time we meet him. Great work.

All children like adventure stories. Peter Cotton takes them on an amazing journey with his entertaining and educational book When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore USA-West. Together with the protagonists of this story (which is the third in the trilogy dedicated to the most significant places in the United States), young readers will have fun exploring memorable places on the West Coast of the United States, starting from sunny California and moving on to Nevada, Alaska, and then Hawaii. Our heroes will discover the most significant places of interest and have memorable encounters with the animals. Are you ready to join them on this fantastic adventure?

When Fred the Snake and Friends Explore USA-West is a book that will surely arouse young readers' curiosity and interest in the places that the participants visit. Peter Cotton has chosen very significant sites (for example, Yosemite Park and Alcatraz Island), and his book will certainly allow young readers to broaden their knowledge of the States on the West Coast. The adventures of Fred, Perdy, and the other characters are fun, and I am sure kids will be excited to read them over and over again. I also believe this book is an excellent tool for teaching children about the geography of the United States and related topics. I can only recommend this picture book to anyone who wants useful and educational reading for their children and students. This story is a great way for them to learn while being entertained.
