Whispers Among the Ruins by Lori Hines is a paranormal mystery. Things are not going well in Southwest America. An unknown being is kidnapping pregnant women and holding them prisoner in his lair. Lorelei and her team of paranormal investigators try to find this ancient culprit, but it is too strong and too smart. Although Lorelei’s abilities have helped in the past, this time around her abilities are proving to be of little to no use. The shapeshifter is smarter than the team thought.

Always a step ahead, it fools them, taunts them and evades them masterfully. But the stakes become even higher when it kills off one pregnant woman. Her death is a blow to the team and strikes fear among everyone. The paranormal investigators have a lot of talent, but their personal differences and their struggles are stopping them from working as a team. Can they work together or will this be the end of Lorelei and her team?

Lori Hines drew me in from the beginning. I have to say, I got the chills right from the tarantula scene. I knew something bad was going to happen and it did. The novel was fast paced, smooth and very entertaining. As a new reader, I was a little confused because I have not read the previous books in the series, but after re-reading those lines once or twice, I got what was happening. There are some references to the previous books, but that only enticed me to find out what happened before. This is indeed a story that I would like to read again!

A special team of psychic investigators and FBI agents is called upon to look into the disappearance of pregnant women in the areas of various ancient Native American historical ruins in Whispers Among the Ruins by Lori Hines. Ian, a Wiccan, his wife, Lorelei, a psychic healer who can teleport and perform astral projection, and Joe, a Native American shaman who is also an FBI agent, encounter an ancient evil being who has come back from a past life and seeks vengeance for his long-ago death. With the combined talents of a young woman they rescue and another investigator who was unaware of her connection to the past, the group races against time, assisted by their contacts and guardians from deep in the cosmos, to track and try to defeat the killer. Will Lorelei and her friends be strong enough to lead the new members of the team through the perils of teleportation and psychic encounters to find the victims and end the reign of terror that threatens them all?

Beautiful descriptions of the American West and Native American sites, as well as a glimpse of the life in ancient Pueblos, provide a stunning backdrop for the harrowing adventures the group experiences, especially as the past and present blend through the characters’ intense psychic connections. As Book 3 of The Ancient Ones series, there is some sense of loss at the beginning if you have not read the other books, but it really isn’t necessary to grasp and thoroughly enjoy Whispers Among the Ruins. Hines moves the action along with enough information to make complete sense and allows you to become immersed in the adventure, experiencing tremendous emotions along with the characters. Great story! I enjoyed it very much, even though I have not read the first two stories.
