Wild and Free by Willow Terez and Annaliese Hofner is an exciting story suitable for children between 10 and 12 years of age. The plot revolves around an adolescent girl, Willow, who is abandoned by her human parents and adopted by a pack of wolves. She is raised by the wolf pack and has a special fondness for her wolf sister, Suki, as she learns to communicate in wolf language. All is not well among the different wolf packs, with intense hatred and rivalry, and many pack fights for dominance. Willow grows to become the beta of her wolf pack where she must lead her followers, including a boy raised by stray dogs, a dog she rescues from a pound, and even a bitter rival from a different wolf pack. We follow her and her pack on a mission to rescue her wolf parents from a military installation.
The action is fast and furious in Wild and Free by Willow Terez and Annaliese Hofner. An easy read, it is well-written and shows a good grasp of plot development, action sequences, including a fire scene, and the range of emotions which even wolves are capable of experiencing. The short chapters keep us moving quickly along. Given the concern to preserve wildlife, including wolves, this story will give young readers a new appreciation for some of the animals in the wild. Adults may need to suspend some of their beliefs and preconceived notions but kids will enjoy this story immensely.
