Wings Against The Wind by JoDee Neathery is a compelling story set against the romantic and mysterious backdrop of Paris, France, in 2014. The narrative revolves around the tragic death of Andrew Dupont, a renowned bookshop owner, whose sudden demise is initially shrouded in suspicion and emotional turmoil. His wife, Paulina, struggles with grief and suspicion, while Gretchen Cassidy, a young American woman entangled in a clandestine affair with Andrew, faces the trauma of loss and upheaval in her life. Gretchen is a member of the Latter-Day Saints and is in Paris on a missionary trip. She meets the man who could have been a father to her, and their connection deepens into an affair. As the investigation unfolds, secrets about infidelity, genetic conditions, and hidden motives come to light. But what caused Andrew’s death, and what happens to the people left behind?
JoDee Neathery quickly introduces the affair between Andrew and Gretchen, creating intrigue that had me turning the pages. The themes of love, betrayal, fate, and starting over are well-managed from the very beginning of the story. The characters are emotionally rich and flawed. Paulina’s sharp, prideful exterior masks deep sorrow and a desire for justice, while Gretchen’s innocence and unwavering love make her likable. The setting of Paris, with its iconic landmarks and romantic ambiance, enhances the atmospheric depth. I enjoyed the symbolism in Wings Against The Wind, notably the book given to Gretchen, and the autopsy revelations. The author’s skillful interweaving of past and present events, along with detailed character development, creates a multidimensional story that resonates with universal truths about love, loss, and renewal. I found this book engaging and a page-turner, thanks to the cast of compelling characters, the plot elements that drove the suspense, and the stellar writing.
