Wings of Ember is the first book in the Fractured Aeons Series by Michael R. Schacht. It is set in the magical city of Eldramere, which is on the edge of rebellion. At the heart of the city's chaos is the Umbral Guard, an elite force that controls magic with an iron grip. Cousins Dayne and Nalada, whose family was torn apart by arcane forces, have trained their entire lives to join the Guard. Dayne seeks to atone for the past, and Nalada aims for leadership. However, their aspirations are swiftly overshadowed when their childhood friend vanishes, and magic is taken from the city's vaults. To make matters worse, a militant group openly challenges the Guard's authority, and Nalada and Dayne have to pick different paths and see where their destinies take them.
Author Michael R. Schacht writes a compelling narrative that balances political intrigue, action, and emotional depth. I loved the dynamic between Dayne and Nalada. Their relationship is the highlight of the story, among the other individual storylines. The contrast in their motivations and inner conflicts is genuine, drives their stories forward, and makes readers enjoy their journeys more. The world-building is incredible, with a complex magical system that simply wows. The city, the Umbral Guard, and the disappearance of their common friend all work toward the development of the cousins. The fast pace keeps readers engaged, building toward a high-stakes climax that satisfies while leaving room for more. Wings of Ember is a great start to the series!
