Winnie’s Christmas Treasure Hunt is a beautiful picture book by Joy K. Ball with illustrations by Manuela Pentangelo. It is time to celebrate Christmas once again. With this in mind, the children go home for the holidays, leaving Winnie, a cactus wren, curious about where they are when they aren’t in school. She is determined to find an answer to this nagging question and gets help from her friend, Dusty the Desert Packrat, who explains that humans live in houses. Winnie becomes even more curious and decides to find out what a human home is like. After multiple failed attempts to get into a human home, she is discouraged. However, a surprise invitation changes things.
Winnie’s Christmas Treasure Hunt by Joy K. Ball utilizes a diverse mix of characters, promoting inclusion and unity by showing them playing and working together to achieve a common goal happily. This is a good message for children to see and will encourage them to be kind to everyone regardless of race and physical limitations. When Winnie gets her wish granted, she remembers to get something for Dusty to thank him, which teaches that we should not forget to thank those who help us get to where we want to be. In this book, Joy K. Ball homes in on the core message of Christmas; the gift of love. While decorating, giving and receiving gifts, and eating delicious homemade food are enjoyable, expressing faith and love for all is what truly matters on this special day. This would be a fine gift for Christmas.
