Writing your memoir is a big undertaking. For one thing, no matter how old (or young) you are, you have a lot of stories to share. So, where do you start? Lita Kurth’s Writing Memoir in Flashes is a good place to begin your memoir writing journey, because that’s what writing a memoir really is: a journey of self-discovery and so much more. The author suggests we start with photographs. Most people have boxes full of family photographs that are stories in themselves. Or, draw some pictures (it doesn’t have to be perfect), like a line drawing/map of the street where you grew up. Remember, you don’t have to be famous to have personal stories to share. We all have them, and we’re all important enough to share them with others.

Lita Kurth’s book, Writing Memoir in Flashes: Creative Ways to Tell Your True Stories, One Memory at a Time, is an excellent tool to help you start writing your stories. The author leads the reader, the potential memoirist, through a series of steps to get the creative juices flowing. Each chapter shares suggestions, as well as examples of other memoirists’ stories, some humorous, others poignant, many written by authors (some of whom are students) who are unfamiliar to the general reading public. There are some exercises to help with the writing journey. Further resources are provided at the end of the book, including some useful publications, as well as a list of “Insider Terms” that many people new to the writing game might not be familiar with. This is a great resource to help you find your voice in memoir stories.
