"1931" by Mike Tucker details the culture of the United States in the year 1931. Prohibition was in effect and the Great Depression was in full swing as well. Tucker tells how the Mafia controlled the bootleggers, the politicians and the flow of illegal liquor. He tells the story in rough, uncut language. When special agents of the Bureau of Investigation declares war on the Mafia, it is a coast-to-coast assault, with no holds barred. While Agent Ness takes control of the West Coast operations, Agent Hawkins and his crew take over the East Coast. They first corner a bootlegger into joining their crew and, from that point on, they move steadily toward a plan to snare a top-notch Mafia Lieutenant named Mosconi. Although Mosconi has ammunition and manpower to spare, Hawkins depends upon loyalty, trust and cunning to maneuver himself into a position to effect real change in the bootlegging business.
Although I was initially cringing at the rough language in the book, I soon lost my sensitivity to the well-written plot and the tremendous research into the prohibition era culture. Tucker's characters are unforgettable and he develops them all through their insightful and down-to-earth dialogues. The reader is soon engrossed in the machinations of the minds and those minds then set the stage for the adventures which ensue. Flashbacks are accomplished without disruption and when the final action commences, it is a breathtaking account of men dedicated to a purpose in which they have full belief. History buffs, you need to read this one!
