Military veteran Marcus Freling is a relatively happy man working as a mail carrier, enjoying life. The main focus of his happiness is his thirteen-year-old niece. To her he’s been more of a father than an uncle. Things have a way of changing in an instant when her young life is ended by a senseless drive-by shooting in Harlem, NY. When the lack of evidence keeps the police from solving the case, Marcus's sorrow turns to anger. Anger gives way to a burning rage, and a desire to inflict vengeance on Troy, the drug dealer responsible for firing the kill shot.
Troy is questioned by Detective Rodgers about the murder, but is released due to lack of evidence. Marcus becomes totally fixated with Troy, watching his every move month after month. After settling on a desperate plan of action, Marcus kidnaps Troy and takes him to a secluded house in the Catskill Mountains. For the next thirty days, his plan is to torture Troy until the day he will end it all, on the anniversary of the death of his beloved niece. As the days pass, his rage and grief turn into something more, something sinister as he serves as the defense attorney, prosecutor, and judge at Troy's mock trial. Somehow Detective Rodgers uncovers Marcus's plot and rushes into the mountains to stop him. But, things don’t work out as he plans. Can he stop this, or will he also fall prey to a still grief-stricken but now most certainly insane Marcus….
Excellent story telling. The first two thirds of the book lead the reader on a journey of a good man slowly losing himself. The last third is pure adrenalin enhancing action. I couldn’t put it down until I reached the end. Very nicely done.
