The Ties That Made Us by Laura Carpenter is about a romance that survives malicious gossip, the paparazzi, and their misinterpretation of events, turning these into something sinister just to sell stories. The main character, Cillian Devlin, has to earn the trust and love of the girl he vowed to love, but then left behind when people’s opinions got in the way. Cillian takes the reader on a journey of discovery, heartache, joy, and finally peace. The author paints a most wonderful picture of a little family's milestones, stumbles, joy, laughter, anger, and finally peace. In their fight to stay together, they go on a journey to Paris for a while, but the call of Belfast is too strong and they return home to Belfast and Delvin Grove, where it all started when Saoirse was sixteen and Cillian was seventeen going on eighteen. The world interfered in their lives because they were from different religions, but love will prevail.
The author captures the reader’s attention with the first paragraph and holds their attention to the very end of the book with a conclusion that is both surprising and unexpected. Laura Carpenter shows the reader how the main character has to fight to regain his place in his little family, especially when he has not been around for 5 years, and how he takes on the world even though it may cost him his career to see that his family is safe, respected, and loved. The author also depicts how cruel the world can be when their idols show that they are only human and suffer, love, and hate like the rest of us ordinary mortals. This book will hold your attention to the last page, and you will find yourself going back to read it again, as it will give you the courage to face your world head-on. An inspiring book that I will recommend to other readers.
