The King of Stonewood is the third book of the Stonewood Trilogy, an epic fantasy by Jeremy Hayes. While it's advisable to read the first two books in this series, this book can be also be read on its own. The King of Stonewood has been dethroned through the machinations of High Priest Sarvin, the leader of a cult that has successfully resurrected the demon lord Lucivenus. The king himself died in the coup, and his son, Prince Orval, went into hiding. The city is now under curfew and surrounded by the demon's forces and allies. Witnesses to one of the many battles and skirmishes taking place in the besieged city are amazed to see the king taking part in the action, and the rumor swiftly flies that the king is not dead and is fighting to regain his throne. Only a few close friends and associates know that the king is really Harcourt, the former thief, who long ago was given a magical mask that can take on the appearance of another.

Jeremy Hayes' The King of Stonewood is a fabulous epic fantasy novel and a satisfying final book in this series. While it's been a while since I read Books I and II, the first few chapters gave just enough background to help me refresh my memory and get involved in the action. Harcourt, Dornell, and Fezzdin quickly seemed like old friends, and I settled in for an exciting read. I was not disappointed. The King of Stonewood is a marvelous tale filled with action, adventure, and epic acts of heroism. Readers who enjoy sword & sorcery tales will love this book -- it's got demons, wraiths, and other supernatural beings all arrayed against a band of intrepid and savvy warriors. The action in The King of Stonewood is fast-paced, and the plot is filled with surprises. Books One and Two of The Stonewood Trilogy were excellent reading, and Book Three joins them as a worthy conclusion to this highly recommended series.
