A Patch of Blue by Sharon Mikeworth tells the story of Carrie who makes an impulsive decision to take a holiday to Fiji after she finds out about her husband’s infidelity. Feeling very sorry for herself, Carrie mopes around the hotel for a while until she decides to see a bit of the country and takes a boat trip that changes her life forever. After falling overboard, she reaches an uninhabited island and there follows a gruelling two years where she struggles to survive. Alone and starving, but never giving up hope of being reunited with her sons, Carrie uses the time alone to realise the people and things that are important to her. Even as she fights for her very survival, the thought of her sons gives her the strength to overcome everything that nature can throw at her.

The author, Sharon Mikeworth, has created an amazing adventure that has both credence and reality as the reader experiences all of Carrie’s emotions and turmoil as she comes to terms with her husband’s betrayal. Her struggles to survive on the remote and uninhabited island had me sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation. The descriptions are stunning and draw the reader into the world of Carrie while she determinedly makes a life for herself as she waits for rescue. What had initially been intended as a brief sojourn turns into a two-year battle of survival and eventually enables Carrie to realise that, apart from her sons, the things and people she thought were important to her are no longer what she wants. This is fast-paced and exciting and I was totally absorbed in the story.
