K.M. Gruchelska’s Seven Point Eight: Virago follows Tahra, a gifted remote viewer working with physicist Paul Eldridge on Project OOBE in 1967. When their experimental machine is disrupted by mysterious beings called the Directors, twelve participants become unresponsive; their consciousnesses apparently scattered across alternate dimensions. As Paul studies the frequencies linked to each participant, Tahra prepares to enter unfamiliar worlds in search of the missing minds, with Max Richardson, the project’s demanding financial backer, pressuring them for results. Decades later, genetic researcher Ava Kavanagh discovers extraordinary properties in her immune system, prompting questions about her own origins. Her fiancé’s interest in commercializing the findings brings new complications, while her longtime friend Sam has unanswered questions about his family. Across both periods, scientific ambition meets phenomena that threaten to overturn everything they believe about reality.

K.M. Gruchelska’s Seven Point Eight: Virago is brilliant metaphysical science fiction, and the author knows how to make the unknown downright frightening. The suspense is fantastic, especially when a Machine Elf, a childlike alien with enormous black eyes, invades Tahra’s thoughts inside a metallic city. I also love the characters. Tahra is my favorite, and her fiery personality shines when she confronts Max over his callous treatment of the volunteers. Ava’s friendship with Sam is lovely, and his dry humor gives their scenes an easy familiarity. The alien worlds are magnificently imagined, from a blue-skinned giant whose eye opens into a corridor to a carnival of grotesque clowns. The author keeps the pace moving as the mysteries reach across decades. Well written and genuinely unsettling, readers who enjoy metaphysical science fiction with supernatural horror will adore this.
