The Doubled Light by Tsung-Long Wu follows Elias Reeves, a salvager who makes his living picking through the aftermath of disasters out in the salt flats. One morning he comes across a scene with no explanation. A dozen people are dead with no wounds, no gunshots, nothing but a strange story from a dying man about a stranger who asks people to call a coin flip and then never lets them see if they were right. Elias takes this mysterious case against every instinct telling him not to. Soon after, a man named August Kane starts coming after him. Kane is drawn toward Elias for a reason tied to fate itself, and Elias has to reckon with the choice he made on the salt flats before it is too late.
Author Tsung-Long Wu knows how to grab the attention of readers. Wu's writing has a slow, dreamlike quality that pulls you in and just does not let go. Every scene felt real and happening right in front of my eyes. Elias is such a warm, human character who makes the story relatable. He is a man who genuinely loves his wife Mara and just wants to get home to her, which makes the dread hanging over him even more effective. August Kane might be one of the eeriest, most memorable characters I've read in a long time. He appears to be very calm, yet there is something strange and unsettling about him. The whole coin-flip concept and dying without ever knowing if you called it right is a haunting concept. The Doubled Light is a thought-provoking novel that had me thinking about it for hours.
