A Chill Movement Is Now in Effect by Saven "Con-A" Watts is a compilation of the author's original poetry that harnesses the power of the time and emotional place he was in while composing the work. The collection consists of ten pieces all written in the latter half of 2018 during one of Watts' most prolific breakthroughs. The poems are all written in free verse that mimics a very natural speech pattern, although the stanzas do frequently conform to meters within themselves and carry a lyrical rhythm delivered in punches. The combination of Watts' words and the jabs of energy they are formatted with breathe life into his experiences in a way that few contemporary poets are able to successfully accomplish. Each poem ends with a soliloquy, also written by Watts, that takes a final stand on the foundation from which the roots of the poem spring, bringing the work full circle.
Saven “Con-A” Watts displays a genuine talent and a prodigious understanding of what makes narrative poetry work in A Chill Movement Is Now in Effect. Initially, I thought the work would be raw and a bit rough around the edges based on the blurb describing it. This isn't the case with Watts who smooths the edges out with injections of allegory that take the obvious and bring deeper meaning to them. My favorite example of this is in his poem Brokecessful, where Watts describes a life where the difference between having cash and having none means being surrounded by people who know the cost of everything, but the value of nothing. The satire is rich and witty without sacrificing its overall meaning. This is an excellent anthology and I have no doubt those who are fortunate enough to read it will feel the same way.
