A Colorful Beginning by Raven Howell is an entertaining picture book about starting school. All the colorful creatures are getting ready to head off to school. Each of them prepares in a different way; some pack food, some pack supplies, and some just quietly head out. Once they arrive at school, their teacher Mr. Mole encourages them to get to know each other by participating in a group project. They are invited to blend their unique colors and celebrate what makes them special. What a joyous and colorful beginning to the new school year.
As a former children's librarian, I would always receive requests for books about starting school. Raven Howell's A Colorful Beginning would have flown off the shelves immediately. Not only does it encompass the many emotions students feel as they head off for their first day, but it also includes a clever color mixing lesson. Kids will enjoy hearing this one read out loud because they can participate in the repeated refrain "Time for School." Carina Povarchik's illustrations are colorful and full of motion. Each of the animals gets a starring role as they prepare to leave, and the classroom is full of warmth and fun. Howell's characters wonder about all the same things kids do. Will I make friends? Will the teacher be nice? What will I learn? This provides an opportunity for parents to discuss those things with their children. This book will be welcomed by parents and teachers alike as they begin a new school year.
