In her memoir Shattered: A Story of Betrayal and Loss, Nora Plesent recounts how her search for affection transformed the life she had built as a New York attorney raising four children. After years in an unhappy marriage, Plesent travels to China to adopt her youngest daughter, only to learn that her brother has died. Weeks after returning home, she receives an unexpected message from Brad, a Hollywood producer she met thirty years earlier, who claims he has never forgotten her. Their renewed connection convinces Plesent that the loving partnership she has always wanted is finally possible. She marries Brad, whose promises persuade her to move three of her children from New York to Los Angeles. Once their households merge, Plesent begins questioning what she believed about the man she married.
In Shattered, Nora Plesent delivers a heartbreaking memoir told with extraordinary candor. Her conversational voice brings readers close as she examines the promises that persuaded her to rebuild her family’s life around Brad, the man she loved. I was moved by her admission that she cried when he presented a framed Certificate of Assurance promising never to leave her again. Her openness helps readers understand the powerful need to believe someone’s reassurance. When Brad abruptly abandons their marriage in Los Angeles, Plesent’s account of her son Cliff finding her asleep alone above the Pacific Ocean is devastating. Her realization that she must accept help after seeing his fear offers another valuable lesson about surviving betrayal. Plesent writes about these experiences with tremendous humanity, giving this memoir its distinctive power. For readers who have experienced heartbreak and are searching for genuine hope, this is the book. Very highly recommended.
