A Debt Returned by Bryan Beck is the third part of the Ancestral Debt Anthology series. Ivy has the chest, but she's not prepared for the journey she must undertake. For as long as she can remember, she's always wanted to be a time traveler, and now her dreams are a reality. Ancient magic flows through her, and she has one job to do—save lives by traveling through time. Her grandfathers before her, James and Robert, started the journey to repay an ancient debt, but if Ivy can't succeed, three lives will be lost. A second magical chest fused with Ivy's, but it has left something dark behind. Lucien is driven by a need for revenge, and he tags along on Ivy's journey through time. Someone must pay for his father's destruction, and Lucien is determined it will be Ivy. Can Ivy succeed in her bid to finally repay the debt, or will she fall foul of Lucien? Ivy is no longer just a time traveler, but is she wise, strong, and brave enough to succeed?
I've been eager to read A Debt Returned by Bryan Beck. I have already read the first two books in this series, and the third one didn't disappoint. This is another epic journey through time, and it continues the themes of responsibility and legacy from the first two books. This is not a standalone book—you must read the first two to understand where this one is going and to get a real feel for the characters. As expected, this is another action-packed story written with humor, but with a darker side this time. Some readers may be triggered by scenes of child violence, murder, and suicide, so be aware before you pick this up. That said, these themes do not dominate the story. Once again, the characters are well defined and easy to relate to, even Lucien with his tortured soul. The ending isn't quite what you think it will be, and it leads me to hope that there is another book on the way—I still don't feel the whole story has been told. If you love time travel stories with plenty of heart and action, you will love this book, but do read the whole series.
