“An idea can be a powerful thing.” For Dale Chihuly, ideas were inspired by his favorite things: “Colors, light, and water. Ice, snow, rain, mist, fog. Whether solid, liquid, or gas, Dave loved water.” Sharon Mentyka tells the story of glass artist Dale Chihuly in A Flash of Color and Light. Every page of this spectacular story is full of bright colors, the same colors that inspired this artist from childhood until he became a brilliantly, creative, and talented sculptor of glass. After all, “Dale never met a color he didn’t like.” The story leads young readers through the early years of the artist’s tragedies until he became one of America’s most gifted glass artists.

Sharon Mentyka’s picture book, A Flash of Color and Light: A Biography of Dale Chihuly, is a brilliantly presented story about a fascinating creative mind. Aspiring young artists will appreciate the stunning watercolor illustrations by Shelley Couvillion that are full of the light and color that inspired this awesome artist. The language is simple but full of educational material that will teach young readers about the beauty of creation, the power of colors, and so much more about modern art. It will also encourage young readers, especially young artists, to persevere in their artistic ventures and pursue their dreams wherever they lead. The end of the book includes additional biographical information about this artist, a brief history of glassmaking as an art, a timeline of the artist’s life, and a useful glossary of artistic terminology. An interesting read and a beautiful book to explore as it introduces readers to the work and world of a spectacular glass artist.
