A Fragment of Chrome by Miikka Rautioaho takes place in Ocean City, a future city controlled by corporations and shaped by pollution and technology. Body modifications are common, and they create significant differences between the characters. Some benefit from them. Others don’t. The main character is Corren “Psyche” Vega, a former soldier who now works as a mercenary. He takes a job from a fixer named Tera Parse to recover stolen technology called the Obsidian Key. It seems familiar at first, like past work. As he investigates, he learns that the theft requires advanced hacking, tight coordination, and serious forethought behind it all. Corren assembles a small team called Twilight Protocol to help him. Each member has skills that matter, such as fighting, technical work, and hacking. Their investigation uncovers violence, secret hacker hideouts, and clashes with the dangerous Marrone crime family. As the job grows riskier, Corren leans on his enhancements while old experiences start guiding his every move.

Miikka Rautioaho's A Fragment of Chrome is a blend of sci-fi, cyberpunk, crime, and suspense. The author's writing style is sharp and keeps the story moving. It doesn’t slow down to explain the world in detail. Ocean City feels broken and unfair without being overdone. The setting adds tension without taking over the story. Characters are introduced naturally, and you learn about them as things happen. Corren comes across as genuine and fascinating, shaped by hard survival and practical thinking. The book cleverly explores over-reliance on technology and how corporations gain from desperate individuals. Overall, it’s an engaging read that lingers long after you've finished it. Readers who love simple, grounded sci-fi with crime and noir elements will enjoy it a lot.
