A Gathering Misery is a short horror novel for adults written by author Rocky Porch Moore. The second tale in the Clemenceau’s Daughters series, we once again pick up the unfortunate life of little Debbie Ballard as she reaches a new stage: the dread of adolescence. Now the somewhat grown-up Deborah, her parents find themselves at their wits' end and send her to her grandmother with a promise that the old bird can straighten her out. Despite this change of scenery, however, the darkness that attaches itself to women in Debbie’s family keeps a firm hold of her. Will she ever escape it? And what will it do when she tries to escape?

I found A Gathering Misery to be an enjoyable self-contained slice of adult horror. As you’d expect, the book is often graphic in content, which felt appropriate to the plot points in the story and didn’t build up until the worst of the action is happening later in the tale. As such, Rocky Porch Moore lures the reader in with the promise of a dark, tragic fairytale, then hits with the full force of horror later on when you’re hooked and invested in poor Debbie’s fate. The characters were well rounded and believable in their actions and emotions, and the legacy concept of a family curse is dealt with in some new and innovative ways that I’ve not read before. Overall, A Gathering Misery is a sequel that packs a punch and I’d definitely recommend it to supernatural horror fans everywhere.
